Secret Love Affair Juke Box: What Scores Does Yoo Ah In Play in His Repertoire?

Secret Love Affair has sparked a piano craze in Korea currently, with people talking about and searching for pieces of music that Yoo Ah In plays during the “private concerto” in Kim Hee Ae’s music room.

Kdramastars reported, in the second episode of Secret Love Affair, Yoo Ah In does some electrically-charged, spine-tingling piano playing and it’s hard to believe that he is not actually a piano prodigy, like the character he plays Lee Sun Jae. If he is just faking being a piano virtuoso, he is a prodigy of an actor.

Kim So Hyung, the pianist who serves as classical music supervisor for the drama, praised the actor’s dedication to the role. “It seems like Yoo Ah In is a real genius,” said Kim So Hyung. “He did not know how to play the piano before but I admire the way he is able to understand and follow along when I tell him something only once.” [I heard playing the piano is one of Yoo Ah In’s hobbies, but it means he did it just for leisure, same thing as the snowboarding and skiing that he’s capable of].

And he is not just moving his fingers to make it look as if he is playing. “If I give him a difficult piece to learn, he returns the next day having memorized it,” said Kim. “I realized that while he is able to immerse himself in the music and has exceptional concentration, he is really a very hard worker.”

The pianist doubts that any other actor could rise to the challenge. “If it wasn’t Yoo Ah In in the role of the prodigy pianist Lee Sun Jae, I don’t think it would be possible.”

Due to popularity of the repertoire scene in the first episodes of Secret Love Affair, JTBC released a “juke box” and the list of scores that Yoo Ah In plays in the drama. I don’t understand classical music, but I’ve grown up listening to them since my parent was into it, and being a choir kid once was quite a help for me to enjoy this music. (Also I was crazy for violin and violinists, but I changed my mind now). Here are the videos of Yoo Ah In’s repertoire~

Schubert’s Fantasy in F Minor for Piano Four Hands, D. 940 (Op. 103)

Bach’s Prelude and Fugue No.1 in C Major, BWV 846

Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 23, Op. 57 “Appassionata”

Paganini Etude No. 4 “Arpeggio”

Tchaikovsky’s The Seasons: April “Snow Drop”

Mozart’s Piano Sonata No. 8 in A Minor, K. 310
