The Throne is a tragic epic that describes the story of King Yeongjo (Song Kang Ho) and Sado (Yoo Ah In) in view of father-son relationship.
Yoo Ah In told why he chose The Throne, “The scenario was very interesting. That was important. Sado was locked in a small bin until he died by his father Yeongjo. This story was described in many works, so I focused on how differently he was depicted in detail. When I read the scenario, I was very impressed.”
He added, “We filmed the movie in heavy atmosphere. But the film depicts a very human Yeongjo, so it has some funny moments too. I think Yeongjo is the most three-dimensional character in this movie.”
It might not easy to act a real person in history. He said, “I think there’s no difference living in this contemporary life right now from then, when two generations fail to understand each other. So, generation gap is parallel regardless the time.”
Yoo Ah In added, “Sado had legitimacy as the crown prince, and it made his father feel so inferior. He did not have to choose his destiny to be king. He was born to be king different to his father Yeongjo. Because of their awful feelings, they did not know whether it was love or hate. This is why their relationship went wrong.”
He talked about acting with Song Kang Ho, “I want to answer it very carefully. It was the best. I really enjoyed. I am not the one who dare estimate him. I just tried to follow his acting. I worried about how I could face him as partner. He gave tension to the relationship in the film and made me act comfortably. He is the best actor”.
In history, Prince Sado was dead in a small bin by his father Yeongjo. Therefore, Yoo Ah In had to play how he was dying for 8 days. It might be very hard psychologically. He said, “Yes it was, but I wanted to experience it as an actor. I could try to express what I experienced although it was hard. I was happy then”.
Director Lee Joon Ik emphasized, “When I wrote the script, I was like ‘Sado is Yoo Ah In’. You have to watch what he shows as Sado in the film. Also, you know how popular Jo Tae Oh is,” Director Lee joked while indicating Yoo Ah In’s currently box office movie Veteran in which he played as Jo Tae Oh.
Director Lee Jun Ik added, “Physically, Yoo Ah In looks different from the real Sado, but the intensity of his eyes are very similar with him.”
Meanwhile, Song Kang Ho praised his junior colleague Yoo Ah In, “We are 19 years apart. I was at his age when I first debuted, but Yoo Ah In at this age has become a great actor. Compare to him, I was a fool.”
Song Kang Ho added, “Yoo Ah In has a great passion as an actor. Being an actor who has the depth in acting has nothing to do with age. In fact, as a senior I had the opportunity to learn from an outstanding younger actor like him.”
