Yoo Ah In VS Yoo Ah In For Best Actor in The 52nd Grand Bell Awards (2015 Daejong Film Awards)
Yes yes yes moar good news for our talented actor Yoo Ah In again! 😀
Having nubbed the Best Actor nomination for the 2015 Blue Dragon Film Awards, Yoo Ah In adds the list of best actor nominees in the 2015 Grand Bell Awards (The 52nd Daejong Film Awards).
Grand Bell Awards has announced through the press release on November 14th that the 2015 hits maker Yoo Ah In is nominated for Best Actor category from both his movies Veteran and The Throne (Sado), which means his name comes up twice in the nominee list, which means he’s up to compete against himself! Awesome! 😀
Yoo Ah In will compete against his seniors too in the best actor category, such as Ha Jung Woo and Son Hyun Joo, including Hwang Jung Min, who plays alongside Yoo Ah In in Veteran.
Veteran got a total of 10 nominations, and The Throne a total of 7 nominations. Through both movies Yoo Ah In drew in nearly 20 million viewers to the cinemas this year alone. Meanwhile, actor Hwang Jung Min is nominated not for Veteran but Ode to My Father instead.
The Grand Bell Awards (or Daejong Film Awards) and Blue Dragon Film Awards are the two most popular film awards in Korea. The Grand Bell Awards (대종상 영화제), also known as Daejong Film Awards, is an awards ceremony presented annually by The Motion Pictures Association of Korea for excellence in film in South Korea.
Though the festival has often been marred by controversy, stemming from bribery and political pressure, the Grand Bell Awards retain prestige as the oldest continuous film awards held in South Korea (the ceremony has been hosted by the Ministry of Culture and Information since 1962), and have been called the Korean equivalent of the American Academy Awards.
The 2015 Daejong Film Awards has found itself in a spot of controversy leading up to its upcoming ceremony this November, having announced a recent change in its rules last October. Per the change, awards will not be given to winners who do not attend the ceremony — they will instead be given to different nominees.
However, no more details were provided in November 14th’s press release about whether or not they’ve cancelled the policy ruling out proxy acceptance of award, other than the list of actors whose attendance has been confirmed. The organization later announced, “Will distribute press release including the details on the no proxy acceptance policy on November 14th or 15th”.
Dramabeans wrote, The Grand Bell Awards hasn’t been without controversy before; its hitherto favorable reputation was tarnished in 1996 when it awarded Best Picture to Henequen, a film that had not even been released yet due to editing hiccups, giving rise to lobbying accusations. And there has been some talk in the past doubting the overall fairness in the judging process, including rumors that actors who wouldn’t be able to attend the ceremony were excluded from nominations, or that there was a push to award popular films. (The results in 2012 drew some heat, when Gwanghae, the Man Who Became King massively swept with 15 awards. Apparently that was the ironic result of adopting blind judging that year.)
The 52nd Grand Bell Awards will be held in KBS Hall on November 20th and the ceremony will be broadcast live starting at 7:40 PM.
