[PHOTOS & VIDEOS] Yoo Ah In is Honored Special Prize At the 10th Asian Film Awards, “The Throne” Wins Best Costume
As we’ve previously reported here, Yoo Ah In was invited to the 10th Asian Film Awards (AFA) in Macau to receive the Special Prize “The Next Generation Award”.
The 10th Asian Film Awards 2016 (AFA 2016) is one of the most awaited major award ceremonies for movies in Asia and touted as “The Oscars of Asia”. The Asian Film Awards are presented annually by the Hong Kong International Film Festival Society to recognized the excellence of the film professionals in the film industries of Asian cinema.
The Next Generation Award is a non-competitive award category given by The Asian Film Award Academy to the young actor who has made an outstanding accomplishment in the film industry and become the leader of the future actors representing Asian cinema. Yoo Ah In is honored The Next Generation Award for drawing nearly 20 million domestic movie-goers into the cinema in 2015, thanks to his blockbuster films “Veteran” (Korea’s 3rd highest-grossing film of all time) and “The Throne” (Korea’s submission for the 2016 Academy Awards/Oscar).
Yoo Ah In’s blockbuster film “Veteran” received 4 nominations for Best Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Editing. Yoo Ah In’s second hit film “The Throne” (“Sado”) received 2 nominations for Best Original Music and Best Costume Design. Eventually, Korea got 2 awards from “The Throne” for the Best Costume Design, and Lee Byung Hun Best Actor in this year’s AFA.
Yoo Ah In was invited to attend the AFA ceremony night and accepted his award on March 17th at the Venetian Theater, Venetian Hotel, Macau. He attended the press conference, answered fans’ questions, walked the red carpet, received the award, made another nice acceptance speech, and had the winner’s backstage interview.
Wait..fans questions? Yups. The AFA through its official twitter held the Q&A with selected actors including Yoo Ah In. Fans threw the questions by mentioning @AFAA with hastag #AskYOO and Yoo Ah In answered live on Twitter Q&A Session. And surprise, surprise, my question was picked by Yoo Ah In 😀 Yay!
Here are the 3 best questions picked by Yoo Ah In that he answered through AFA twitter~
Q: If you get an 18+ film offer, are you going to accept or reject it? / YAI: Yes, I would definitely accept it, otherwise I wouldn’t have picked this question to answer.
(Excuse the grammar, I was drunk :p ) Q: Any advice for the young aspiring actors out there to become the real artists like you? / YAI: I would say every newcomer would come across very different paths. It’s important to find your own ways.
Q: Lee Bang Won is really smart and charismatic but also cruel and crazy. Do you ever feel any similarity between you and him? / YAI: I think I’ve got hold of a world that I’m not familiar with through this character, and it’s fantastic.

Besides Yoo Ah In, other Korea film workers who were invited to AFA are director Ryu Seung Wan, actors Oh Dal Soo, Park Sodam, Chun Woo Hee who took the host position, Lee Byung Hun, Jeon Yeon Sang, and Clara. In addition, girl group AOA was invited to give a performance in AFA ceremony night.
One of the questions to Yoo Ah In in the AFA press conference was about his special appearance in Descendants of The Sun series. Yoo Ah In explained that the cameo was a present for the leading lady Song Hye Kyo, who works at the same agency as Yoo Ah In. She celebrated her birthday during the filming of the drama. It was Yoo Ah In first thought of the cameo during the celebration.
In an interview at the Asian Film Awards, Yoo Ah In said, “I wasn’t able to give her a present at the party. I wanted to prepare a secret present for her and I got the opportunity to make a cameo appearance in her drama.”
To the question asking about his favorite scene in the drama, Yoo Ah In answered, “wine kiss” as the most memorable scene. He also revealed that he will be appearing as a bank teller that interacts with Kang Mo Yeon (Song Hye Kyo). The cameo takes place in the second half of the drama as Yoo Ah In’s SBS drama “Six Flying Dragons” will not be wrapping up until the end of March.
It’s pretty difficult to find the full videos of Yoo Ah In at the AFA, but here are some fancams, official video and short clips from the event~
