Yoo Ah In’s Military Enlistment Put on Hold Due to Ligament Rupture, UAA Releases Official Statement

Yoo Ah In clarifies his official position regarding his military re-examination.

Yoo Ah In has received a “needs re-evaluation” result after his third medical checkup at the Military Manpower Administration (MMA). He’s currently 30 years old, and according to Korea’s military service law, his enlistment must be decided in the near future. Through various press conferences and interviews, Yoo Ah In has repeatedly expressed his desire to complete his military enlistment requirements.

However, a past shoulder injury he incurred while filming “Veteran” has caused him to receive a “military service classification postponement” result, and he has been asked to get another medical checkup in 2017. [Note: the high intensity action scenes in “Veteran” has caused ligament rupture on his shoulder that it was very painful to even stretch an arm. Read here and here]

This was the actor’s third physical evaluation, with the first taking place in December 2015 with the results, “Needs six months of observation.” He received his second evaluation in May 2016, and was told his previous injury would require further observation.

UAA, Yoo Ah In’s agency, has explained on the 27th December, “Yoo Ah In got re-examined for the third time on December 15th in Daegu Regional Military Manpower Administration. The military service ruling is on hold again.”

His label frustrated with the results, said that Yoo Ah In has pushed back his contracts with productions as well as advertisement deals in order to enlist. But they keep hearing that ‘in this state, we cannot issue a call to enlistment’ from MMA. “At this rate, Yoo Ah In has no options to be able to enlist successfully. He has no choice but to wait for his reexamination date,” said his label.

The following is the full official statement of UAA, translated by The Sassy Translator of Yoo Ah In International Fans Community:

Hello. This is an announcement from UAA.

Actor Yoo Ah In was re-examined for the third time on December 15th in Daegu Regional Military Manpower Administration. As a result, he received the ruling of being placed on military grading hold again.

According to Daegu Regional Military Manpower Administration: “Orthopedic surgeons are still required to observe the injured area. And Yoo Ah In’s military grading has been put on hold”.

During filming, Yoo Ah In’s left shoulder muscle has suffered a rupture.

Daegu Regional Military Administration has

① in December 2015, first physical evaluation result: postponed military service, saying that “6 months of follow-up are necessary”.

② in May 2016, second physical re-evaluation result: “[military service] judgment has been postponed again. Further observation of the injured area is required”.

③ in December 2016, third physical re-evaluation result: [military service] judgment was postponed for the third time, citing that “observation of progress is needed”.

Yoo Ah In has postponed works and advertisement contracts because of his active service enlistment. However, he has received this answer from the military administration repeatedly: “with his current condition, his military grading can’t be decided”.

With Yoo Ah In’s current circumstances, there’s no way for him to serve right now. All he can do is waiting, again, for the re-examination date, and working hard on his rehabilitation.

Yoo Ah In hopes that there will be clear results within a short period of time, so that he can faithfully fulfill his military service obligations.

As a commenter said on AKP, since the Military Affairs isn’t totally dismissing him as unable to serve, he is in a limbo of doing nothing but not getting any work because he needs to not have any commitments if he does ever get approved. Hopefully, by the end of the re-examination, they will tell him outright if he will finally be able to do his mandatory service or not at all, so that he can move on and actually do something fruitful with the time he has been wasting just waiting.

Yoo Ah In was in the top trending topic on Naver today after they broke the news~

Aww he’s been looking forward to the active duty all the time, but MMA keep him hanging due to his slow recovery. Let’s wish Master Sik a better shoulder treatment and speedy recovery to fulfill his duty soon. Doesn’t matter where he”ll be serving -be it the police unit or public service- as long as he’ll do it and come back to us soon too!

Fighting, Master Sik!

It’s not his wish to get his shoulder injured or his MS postponed. It sucks that he’s been postponing works too because they keep him hanging like that. Get well soon, Yoo Ah In!!

Praying for his speedy recovery so he can enlist normally 🙏🙏

I did not know the injury from 2014 was that serious. I hope he heals soon. Shoulder pain makes doing almost everything uncomfortable.

Oh my. This is bad news. In the majority of cases, most shoulder injuries should not require surgical intervention. However, a major tear in the ligaments does usually require surgery. And there’s usually an extensive recovery period which can last for up to six months. The reason for this is that it takes some time for the tendon to heal and to re-attach properly to the bone. The recovery period will vary from patient to patient and depend on the severity of the tear. I think he’ll end up being classified/assigned as the civil worker. If they insist on active duty, it will just make his injury worst.

Yoo Ah In might have been ignoring his pain, as I saw him keep shooting films/drama one after another from early 2014 til early 2016. It’s unfortunate that it seems no one in his company advised him to perform a thorough medical examination and rehab after the Veteran incident. If only he was taken care ASAP, he would have gotten better now.

My thoughts and prayers for Yoo Ah In so that he’ll get well soon 🙏🙏

Maybe he should rest and do rehab now with orthopedic surgeon. I think he would at least need 3-6 months to fully healed. I wish all the best for him!
