Yoo Ah In is in Talks For Lead Role in Upcoming tvN Drama “Chicago Typewriter”
Yoo Ah In’s military enlistment is coming up, but he may get one more project in before he goes, as the lead in tvN’s upcoming drama, “Chicago Typewriter” (“시카고 타자기”, tentative title).
In response to reports about his appearance in the drama, a source from Yoo Ah In’s side clarified, “It is true that we received an offer for the role, but it is one of the many works we are looking into.”
“Chicago Typewriter” will be written by the writer of “The Moon Embracing the Sun” and “Kill Me, Heal Me”, directed by Kim Cheol Kyu (“On the Way to the Airport”, “My Beautiful Bride”, “Emergency Couple”). The plot seems a bit bonkers but fun, featuring writers that lived under Japanese rule in the 1930s who are reincarnated in the present as a bestselling writer in a slump, an anti-fan of the bestselling writer, and a mysterious ghostwriter.
If Yoo Ah In accepts, he will play bestselling writer Han Se Joo, who possesses a sensitive and prickly personality.
The script is still under discussion, and details of the fantasy romantic comedy are sketchy, but given that tvN has been putting its prestige projects into the Friday-Saturday time slot, it may not have been such a far-fetched story. The last show to air on the network in that time slot was ratings monster, “Goblin”, starring Gong Yoo and Kim Go Eun
With reports about Yoo Ah In preparing for his next drama, people are beginning to wonder when he will enlist. Last December, Yoo Ah In received a “needs re-evaluation” result in his medical checkup for the third time. Due to a past shoulder injury, he is having trouble passing the checkups and had to repeatedly postpone his enlistment. At the moment, Yoo Ah In is still waiting for the fourth physical re-examination from the military manpower administration. [Read the update/follow up on his military service issue here]
In an interview last July, he explained, “No matter how rationally I proceed given my situation, there will be people who will ask: ‘why hasn’t he fulfilled his military duty yet?’. I do want to wait until my enlistment is confirmed without filming anything at all, but then again, I don’t want to waste the time I have just because of what others are saying about me.”
Meanwhile, it was previously reported that Park Shin Hye also received an offer to star in “Chicago Typewriter”, however, Park’s management came out with a statement saying that she had not confirmed yet.
“Chicago Typewriter” is set to air on tvN at the end of March, on Fridays and Saturdays following “Tomorrow With You”.
