A Military Officer Sends Heartfelt Message to Yoo Ah In

While Yoo Ah In was having some debate with ‘Megalia’ at twitter, and the Ilbes and Megals, anti-feminist and pro-feminist individuals having a huge “battle” in his instagram (they made quite a scene), there was one person who couldn’t help but admire Yoo Ah In’s speeches and writings. And it’s very special, because he came from a group which people would never guess support Yoo Ah In (for sure he’s not an Ilbe).

On November 24, Yoo Ah In posted the private messages from a South Korean army officer to him. [Note: Yoo Ah In already asked his permission to publish/post his messages in his public instagram].

The officer introduced himself as aย South Korean Army NCO or a non-commissioned officer of the South Korean Army. [Note: A non-commissioned officer is a military officer who has not earned a commission. Non-commissioned officers, in the English-speaking world, usually obtain their position of authority by promotion through the enlisted ranks. They are often referred to as “the backbone” of the armed services, as they are the primary and most visible leaders for most military personnel. Additionally, they are the leaders primarily responsible for executing a military organization’s mission and for training military personnel. Read more here].

The NCO corps usually includes all grades of corporal and sergeant, platoon sergeant or squad leader. And this officer who sent Yoo Ah In the messages is presumably a sergeant, as he’s got ten years of career in the army.

In his letter, the officer showed his admiration towards Yoo Ah In’s silver tongue, and revealed that even these brave men, these heroes [Koreans have mad respect on their soldiers and treat them like a hero], are struggling for their life in this “peaceful period”.

The officer showed his support to Yoo Ah In as well, despite the fact that Yoo Ah In is a military exempt.

Translations on his messages:

Sergeant: [message was cut here] “……Perhaps, the reason for sending this message (although I don’t know whether you will read this or not) to you -who’s two years older than I?-ย is just to whine my complaints out. I wish you would consider to take a look/read.”

“My life made me somewhat older [then my age], and I’m now in my 10th year of service. I am now a Non-Commissioned Officer of the South Korean Armed Forces/South Koreanย NCO. Of course, it does not matter if you’re not able to serve/to enlist. This is not what I mainly want to say.”

“What I really want to say is that my life, which began in early 20s with a deep sense of pride and honor in my heart, was so different from the reality that I feel now. People think that this tanned face with cracked fingers is a devoted person who’s guarding the country.”

“Unfortunately, in order to support my parents and pay the tuition for my two younger siblings, I borrowed a loan. Ten years of hard work resulted in a mere 50 million Won loan debt waiting for me to return it. Haha.. Ironically, the military corps who are guarding this country often feel shaken and anxious, but we have nowhere to get evacuated. There’s no one to talk to… hahaha. Because, I know that other people are doing well~ Friends and relatives… haha [note: he didn’t want to bother them with his problem]. I thought about talking to the colleagues at work, but it would be no different from lying and spitting.”

“Sometimes when I see how good you are in expressing your thoughts through social media, I envy you… “

[Here the message was cut, so we couldn’t see the rest, and it jumped to another passage]

“Actually, I wanted to go to university and take acting major too. But due to my family’s circumstances, I chose this way to get a job quickly and a source of income. Haha… Obviously, I didn’t mean to get into this current situation/I wasn’t supposed to end up like this now.”

“I will keep on supporting you. Thank you for listening to my complaints”.

Yoo Ah In: “This [message] gives me strength. Please, cheer up! Although these [my words] are just words, but they are true and sincere: I have no connection with you, but I, just like you, is an ordinary citizen of South Korea too. I will help you through my activities and artistry. Thank you. Thank you for expressing yourself to me, instead of a ‘whine out’. You’re cool!”

Sergeant: “Hongsik-nim’s words are definitely not just [empty] words. Thank you. I will continue to support you in the future. Thank you.”

Yoo Ah In wrote the caption in his instagram post with: ๐ŸŒ

So, what can you say about this situation? First, it appears that most guys who keep on complaining about Yoo Ah In’s exemption are the ones who “only” did their two years of active duty. The ones who chose military as a career (who volunteered to guard the country) don’t seem to mind at all. Unlike the other guys, this sergeant, didn’t complain to him ‘why didn’t you serve?, why do you continue your easy life out there while we’re serving the country here?’, etc etc.

Second, Yoo Ah In wanted to point out that, in light of the feminism debate and his humanity principle, men and women are facing the same problems in this world. Even a man who’s having the “superior” and “special” attributes then other men thanks to his military rank, is carrying a huge burden of life just like everyone else’s. No matter what position we hold in this society, we all are struggling to live. We are living together in one world. Regardless of the gender, beliefs, ranks, social-political and cultural background, people should help and have compassion towards each other. That’s what humanity means to Yoo Ah In.
