Yoo Ah In’s “Burning” to release in North America, join more international festivals + more stills revealed

As expected, “Burning” gets loads of international festival invitations this year.

Following the Munich International Film Festival where “Burning” is competing with other international films in the CineMasters Competition section and having the screening time as well, June 22 – July 7, 2018, Lee Chang Dong’s masterpiece is slated to screen (and already screened) for the first time in some more international festivals across Europe. In addition to Taiwan, Russia, France and Singapore, “Burning” will also release in North America on October 26th and Thailand on July 19th.

Variety quoted as saying:

Cannes winner ‘Burning’ bought by Well Go for October release. Well Go USA has acquired all North American rights to Lee Chang-dong’s Korean drama “Burning,” which won the Fipresci Prize last month at the Cannes Film Festival.

Well Go USA will release “Burning” to theaters across the nation beginning Oct. 26 in New York City, with expansion to follow throughout November. Based on a story by Haruki Murakami, “Burning” centers on an alienated young man, played by Ah-in Yoo as a frustrated introvert whose already difficult life is complicated by the appearance of two people into his orbit: a spirited young woman (Jong-seo Jun) who offers romantic possibility, and a wealthy young man (Steven Yeun of “The Walking Dead”) she returns from a trip with.

Art director Shin Jeom-hui won the Vulcan Award of the Technical Artist at Cannes, an independent prize given to the best technical artist in filming, editing, art, and sound.

Peter Debruge of Variety called the film “beguiling” in his review and said, “The degree to which ‘Burning’ succeeds will depend largely on one’s capacity to identify with the unspoken but strongly conveyed sense of jealousy and frustration its lower-class protagonist feels, coupled with a need to impose some sense of order on events beyond our control.

“’Burning’ is exactly the kind of film we’re always looking out for — it is auteur filmmaking at its finest,” said Dylan Marchetti of Well Go. “Well Go has a rich history of bringing the best films from Asia to North American audiences, and like we did with ‘The Assassin,’ ‘The Wailing,’ and so many more, we can’t wait to help get diverse audiences into a dark room to take this powerful journey together.”

“Burning” is written by Oh Jung-mi and Chang-dong. The film was produced by Chang-dong and Lee Joon-dong. The deal was negotiated by Doris Pfardrescher for Well Go USA and Youngjoo Suh for Finecut Co LTD on behalf of the filmmakers.

 

So far, “Burning” will be (and has already been) screening and premiere in five more international festivals across Europe and in Taiwan. Here is the schedule:

June 15 – 16: Screening and premiere at the 12th Mirror Andrei Tarkovsky International Film Festival (special preview July 2 to 3, opens in cinemas July 5). The MATIFF, also known as Mirror International Film Festival, is being held in honor of the well-known film director Andrei Tarkovsky. 

June 28 – July 14: Screening at Taipei Film Festival (opens in cinemas June 29). TFF is one of the most influential film festivals in the Chinese-speaking world.

July 1, 2, 7: Screening at Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in Czech Republic. The Karlovy Vary Festival is one of the oldest in the world and has become Central and Eastern Europe’s leading film event.

July 11: Screening at The Golden Apricot Yerevan International Film Festival in Armenia. Golden Apricot is one of the biggest cultural events in Armenia and takes place annually under the auspices of the European Cultural Parliament.

July 26 – August 5: Screening at New Horizons International Film Festival in Poland in late July. The New Horizons Festival is one of the biggest and most popular film festivals in Poland.

October 5 – 14: Screening at Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival in Spain. The Sitges Film Festival Festival (Internacional de Cinema Fantàstic de Catalunya) is one of the world’s foremost international festivals specializing in fantasy and horror films.

► Taiwan: June 29

Since he was unable to personally visit Taiwan for the film promotion, Yoo Ah In specially recorded a 30-second video for fans. He greeted the Taiwanese audience, introduced himself, and said, “I hope that everyone will love the film, and I hope I will have the opportunity to meet with the audience in Taiwan”.

► Russia: July 5

Screened for the first time on June 20th at the Mirror International Film Festival’s VIP premiere attended by local celebrities, the film has already received fantastic review from Russian preeminent film critic, radio and TV host, author of four books on modern cinema, and editor of The Art of Cinema Anton Dolin, with title “The Korean screen adaptation of Haruki Murakami turned out to better than the original work”. Anton Dolin is the honoree of three awards by the the Guild of Film Scholars and Critics, as well as the winner of “Triumph” youth award. So, his super positive review on “Burning” is a big thing. His review article in Meduza has already been shared more than one thousand times. He shared his review link in his personal Facebook page along with the caption: “This is probably one of the best films from Korea I ever saw in my life, along with Oldboy and Memories of Murder. This film should receive Palme d’Or for its incredible cinematography” (he wrote the review on May 17th, before Cannes Festival announced the winners). Dolin also became the presenter and moderator for July 2nd’s “Burning Special Preview & Discussion”.

The trailer is dubbed in Russian, so it means the whole film is dubbed in Russian and we’ll get to hear Yoo Ah In talking in Russian?! Hmm….

There’s no local poster yet, but Thailand has released some new and not-so-new stills for “Burning” (Thai title: “Burning มือเพลิง”).

► France: August 29

French film critic Martin Debat from Eastasia France quoted as saying in the latest “Burning” review article, “We’ll be confounded for a long time what took the Cannes jury to ignore such a beautiful film”. Yups, I’m wondering too! *side-eyeing the head of jury Cate Blanchett*

► North America: October 26 

Unlike other countries, both France and North America only released the old stills we’ve seen before, for now.
