Yoo Ah In wins Best Actor at the 15th Asian Film Awards

VOICE OF SILENCE bagged home two awards at the 15th Asian Film Festival; Best Actor for Yoo Ah In and Best New Director for Hong Eui Jeong, following their victories at the 30th Buil Film Awards.

Having initially been held in Hong Kong in March, the Asian Film Awards are now jointly organized by the Hong Kong, Busan and Tokyo festival and take place in the autumn. The 18 prizes were handed out Friday evening, October 8th, at a hybrid ceremony with the in-person component held at Busan’s Paradise Hotel during the ongoing Busan International Film Festival.

About 80 nominees attended either in person or online with many of the prizewinners tuning in to give their acceptance speeches by video teleconferencing. Among those in Busan to tread the AFA red carpet were Korean stars and prize-winners Yoo Ah In, Hong Eui Jeong and Lee Byung Hun, including this year’s AFA head of judges director Lee Chang Dong.

During his acceptance speech, Yoo Ah In, who on the previous day has just won the Buil’s Best Actor, made a little reflection again and especially thanked director Lee Chang Dong,

Thank you. Among the nominees, there are actors who made great noises (voices) that I feel sorry for receiving such a big award without making a noise. What are the lines? What are the voices? What do these mean for actors?; I think this seems to be a time to think about it. I want to say thank you so much to Director Hong Eui Jeong. I would also like to thank director Lee Chang Dong here, who I haven’t seen in a while. You may hate being mentioned, but I’ve never had a chance to greet you on a stage like this. Thank you so much for allowing me to live and breathe life as an actor into me. Thank you all. I will continue to do my best!

 

Director Hong Eui Jeong, who also won Buil’s Best New Director the day before, said in her speech,

There have been so many miraculous things happened over the past year. Thank you so much to the distributor and producers for helping me complete this film production. I’m so grateful for actors Yoo Ah In and Yoo Jae Myung for bringing me this amazing moment. I’m a little nervous right now, so my voice is shaking. Thank you to the staff and actors who worked so hard to make this film with me and finished filming together in the hot summer. Thank you very much writer Hong, who’s like a mentor, who I respect the most. I will continue to work hard.

 

In 2016, Yoo Ah In received “The Next Generation Award” Special Prize for his performances in VETERAN and THE THRONE due to the fact that AFA deemed him as the representative of Asia’s next generation actors. Five years later he proved his worth by winning the Best Actor.

With AFA win, Yoo Ah In has secured 5 Best Actor trophies under his belt (Blue Dragon Awards, Baeksang Arts Awards, Fantasia International Film Festival’s Cheval Noir award, Buil Film Awards, Asian Film Awards) for VOICE OF SILENCE alone. And this work came from a woman director! Daebak!! 💃💅👏
